ith
just a few sticks of balsa wood and a couple of drops
of glue, you too can build a simple fence for your games
of Warhammer. On this page, you'll find not one,
but two simple methods to make a fence of any length.
So dig up some balsa and get started! |

|
|
|
| Make a simple base out of any material
you have at hand. We used a small rectangle of
1/4" foamcore. Next, using balsa wood strips
of two different thicknesses, cut out the posts
for your fence and the fence boards. The number
of fence posts you'll need will vary depending
on the length of the fence. On the other hand,
you'll only need about two fence boards. There
is no need to be too exact, as most fences are
not perfect but are instead weathered and rotted
in the Warhammer world. Plus, an imperfect fence
is more interesting visually. |

|
|
| Glue the fence posts so that they are pointing
up and down in a straight line along your base.
We cut little notches in the foamcore for the
fence posts to seat, thus increasing their stability.
Wait for the posts to dry before finally gluing
on the fence boards. However, it would be wise
to test-fit the boards before the glue dries to
see if they lie flat against all the posts. |

Let
the piece dry completely before you texture
the base and then begin painting. In the meantime,
you could make up a few more lengths of fence!
Painting wood like this is a breeze because
the balsa wood has a subtle texture that it
is easily brought out with a simple drybrush.
Here, we used a progression of drybrushes from
Scorched Brown to Bestial Brown and finishing
with a light dusting of Bleached Bone.

| This fence is different in that it requires
a bit more balsa wood, but it is almost easier
to build! First, get some balsa wood of varying
thicknesses. Chop up the balsa wood into roughly
equal-sized lengths. Once you have a nice pile
of fence boards, make a support beam that will
run the length of the fence. Glue everything
together as shown in the picture above and let
it dry. |

Once the glue dries, texture your base and
paint it up. Here, we used a progression of
drybrushes from Scorched Brown to Codex Grey
and finishing with a light dusting of Fortress
Grey.
If you think you've mastered the art of fence
making, try moving on to other terrain projects.
Attempt to build a small gate for the fence,
make a large length of fence, or try to combine
a fence, a gate, and a hedge.
